Nokonoshima is a small island that is technically part of the Western District of Fukuoka City. It’s located in the middle of Hakata Bay with 12 km in perimeter. Even though this island is right in front of the urban center of Fukuoka and easy to visit (only a 10 minute ferry ride from Meinohama Ferry Station), you feel as if you have gone to a nature preserve. At one of the island’s main attractions, Nokonoshima Island Park, you can enjoy daffodils and plum blossoms in winter, field mustard blossoms in spring, and cosmos in autumn. Please be aware that there will be a large crowd during the peak seasons.
This park, which covers about 60 square miles, is located in the northern part of the island. From the observation deck, you can enjoy the view of a large portion of Fukuoka City. As I mentioned, it is very convenient to visit this island – only 2 km from the island ferry station to Marinoa City (popular with shopping in the outlet centers) and just 5 km from Seaside Momochi (right next to Yahuoku Dome) and Fukuoka Tower. In addition, you can fish, swim, and enjoy camping. I personally like to barbecue in the warm season surrounded by the beaches and flowers.
You can take a bus from Tenjin to Meinohama Ferry Station. Ferry rides cost 230 yen one way.
