How to dispose of garbage in Japan

One thing that surprises foreigners living in Japan for the first time is how detailed the rules for garbage disposal are. Today, I’ll explain how to dispose of garbage in Japan.

〇 Putting Out Garbage

In Japan, household garbage must be placed at designated locations for collection. The rules for putting out garbage vary by municipality. If you don’t follow the rules, your garbage won’t be collected, and it will cause inconvenience to your neighbors. Be sure to put out your garbage exactly as required by your local municipality.

〇 Sorting Garbage

Garbage must be sorted by type before disposal. Garbage categories include burnable waste, non-burnable waste, recyclables, and bulky items. Sorting methods vary by municipality, so please dispose of your garbage according to the rules of the municipality where you live.

〇 Collection Locations, Days, and Times

Do not leave garbage in areas other than designated collection sites. Do not put out trash on days when collection is not scheduled. There are designated times for putting out trash. You cannot put out trash at any other time. The location, day, time, and method for each type of trash are determined by the municipality where you live. In Fukuoka Prefecture, some cities collect trash in the morning, while others collect it at night. There are also designated trash bags. You can purchase them at supermarkets or convenience stores. If you dispose of trash outside of designated areas, you may be penalized for illegal dumping.

〇 Other Rules

There are items that must not be disposed of as regular trash. Items such as air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines are designated for recycling. You must pay a fee and arrange for recycling at the store where you purchased the product.

To ensure a smooth and worry-free life in Japan, be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for trash disposal.
