Students Learn About Japanese Traffic Rules

Recently, NILS students participated in a special safety workshop to learn about Japanese traffic rules. Since many of our students use bicycles for commuting and daily errands, understanding how to ride safely in Japan is essential. For this workshop, the police borrowed the training course of a nearby driving school and conducted a bicycle safety lesson there.

Police Borrow a Driving School for Hands-On Training

For this event, the local police borrowed the training course of a nearby driving school and conducted a bicycle safety lesson there. The workshop covered essential traffic rules, the meanings of road signs, and correct road positioning—topics that can be unfamiliar for international students.

Students Practice Riding on a Real Training Course

One of the most engaging parts of the workshop was the hands-on riding practice. Several student volunteers rode bicycles on the driving school’s course while police officers guided them through different situations, including how to navigate intersections and respond to traffic signals. Being able to practice on an actual training course helped students gain confidence and understand how the rules work in real-life settings.

Stunt Demonstration: Seeing Accidents Up Close

A professional stunt performer also joined the event and demonstrated realistic traffic accident scenarios. These included collisions between bicycles and cars as well as situations where a cyclist cannot stop in time. Watching these scenes up close gave students a powerful reminder of how quickly accidents can occur.

Mayor and TV Crew Visit the Event

The workshop drew attention from the local community as well. The city mayor and a television news crew visited to cover the event. Students were filmed as they practiced and listened to the instructions, and the report was aired on the evening news. One student even answered a TV interview in impressive Japanese.

Learning Safety Through Real Experience

By combining instruction, practice, and live demonstrations, the workshop helped students understand not only the rules but also how to apply them in real situations. NILS will continue providing opportunities like this to ensure students can enjoy a safe and comfortable life in Japan.
