From Arrival to Starting Life at NILS

Starting a new life in Japan can feel a little overwhelming, since everything is new and different. But don’t worry — at NILS, teachers are here to support you so you can settle in smoothly. Here’s what the process looks like from your arrival until the beginning of your new life in Japan.

1. From the Airport to the Dormitory

When you arrive at the airport, a NILS teacher will meet you at the arrival gate. From there, you’ll head to the dormitory by taxi. Many students arrive with large amounts of luggage, but that’s no problem at all. Taxis have plenty of space for your bags, so you don’t need to worry.

2. Getting Settled in the Dorm

Once you arrive at the dormitory, a teacher will explain how to use the facilities and show you what you need to know for daily life. One of the first things you’ll probably want to use is your phone charger. In Japan, outlets are Type A, 100V, so we recommend bringing a conversion plug or voltage adapter. Of course, the dorm is equipped with Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to connect to the internet right away.

3. Shopping for Daily Essentials

After you’ve had a short rest, it’s time to go shopping for daily necessities. Sometimes a teacher may be able to go with you, but you might also go on your own. A great place to start is the 100-yen shop, such as Daiso. You can find many useful items at a very affordable price. We recommend buying what you can there first, and then purchasing any additional items you couldn’t find at another store later.

4. Bank Account and Orientation

On the following weekday, you’ll go with a teacher to open a bank account. You’ll also attend an orientation at school to learn about daily life and school life in Japan. As for the paperwork at the city hall, don’t worry — all of those procedures are handled by NILS teachers, so you won’t need to struggle with complicated Japanese documents.

5. Starting Your Life in Japan

Once everything is prepared, your new life in Japan officially begins. At NILS, teachers not only support you at school but also in your daily life, so you can start living in Japan with confidence, even if it’s your first time here.

📌 Summary

At NILS, support is provided for every step — from airport pick-up, dorm guidance, shopping advice, and opening a bank account, to orientation and city hall procedures. With this system in place, you can begin your new life in Japan without stress and with peace of mind.
