Learning Japanese, Living in Japan: Voices from NILS Ogori

Ever wondered what it’s like to study Japanese in Japan? We spoke with four students who are currently learning at NILS in Ogori, Fukuoka. Here’s what they had to say about their experience.

Nicolai from Denmark

Hello, my name is Nicolai, and I have studied Japanese at NILS in Ogori for the last six months. It’s been really helpful, and the teachers here are very nice and really good at helping you adapt to life in Japan. I’ve definitely learned a lot in the last six months—more than I ever thought I would. I would definitely recommend people to start here if they want to learn the language. Thank you.

Ben from the US

Hey there! My name is Ben Wilmont from Montana in the USA. I came to Japan because I wanted to experience the culture and slowly create pathways to possibly stay longer. NILS has been a great school because all of the teachers are very patient and kind. It’s a really well-structured school, so the steps of learning are very well thought out and really helpful.
If you’re looking for a school that’s going to help you stay in Japan for a long time and create opportunities to find jobs and meet new people, I highly recommend NILS. It’s a great school.

TJ from the US

My name is Tieran Jacobs. I’m currently attending NILS Language School in Fukuoka, Japan. I’ve been studying for about six months now, and I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far. The teachers are all super friendly and very open to any questions you might have about the language. All of the courses are very easy to understand, and the teachers are always willing to work with you if you need help figuring things out.
I think it’s a great option if you’re looking to spend a significant amount of time in Japan—whether you just want to stay for a while and experience the culture, or if you’re planning to work here in the future. I think it’s a really great idea. Thank you!

Armando from the US

My name is Armando Hernandez, and I’m a student at NILS Japanese Language School. I’ve been a student here for six months, and it’s been a great experience.
From the start, there’s not much English spoken—it’s mostly Japanese, so the immersion you get is really great. You have to slowly learn to understand what your teachers are saying, and I feel like that way of learning is best. You naturally adapt.
As for the teachers’ instructions, they’re excellent. They give you a lot of context and pictures, and they use simple sentences so you can really grasp the grammar and vocabulary. I’m currently studying for the JLPT N3, and I find the instruction at the school to be excellent for preparing for the test.
I highly recommend NILS to anyone interested in learning Japanese seriously—whether for living or working in Japan. Thank you.

Whether you’re dreaming of living in Japan, preparing for the JLPT, or simply curious about a new language, NILS Ogori might just be the place to start your journey. Why not hear it from the students themselves—and take the first step?
