Traditional Food Trucks in Japan

Hello, how are you?

It’s getting cold these days in Japan.

On a cold day like today, you may have a chance to see a yakiimo truck in town if you are lucky.

Yakiimo(()(いも) : roasted sweet potatoes) truck is a  mobile food truck that sells roasted sweet potatoes.

Yakiimo is warm and sweet, and it just hits the spot on a cold day in autumn or winter.

Yakiimo trucks play a jingle that goes “ee-shi-ya-kee-eemo.”

It may sound strange when you hear it for the first time, if you are curious, please search on the web “Japanese Yakiimo sound”.

Like an ice cream truck, upon hearing the sound, people gather the truck to buy yakiimo to eat with friends and family, or by themselves!

In addition to yakiimo trucks, you might see old fashioned tofu trucks with their own special jingle.

Or, ramen trucks. A ramen truck plays its own interesting jingle as well, but unfortunately, it’s not so common nowadays.

Of course, you can get just about any type of food delivered to your home or office.

If you have a chance to try food on a truck, please challenge yourself and eat what’s out there!
